Malcolm X's Legacy Today
Malcolm X's is still considered one of the most influential African Americans in U.S. history and the spread of Islam. His tremendous impact in the United States is evident by the numerous literature, films, and music which continues to be created nearly fifty years after his assassination. There have been dozens of books, films, and songs written on Malcolm’s life and influence; starting in the 1960’s and continuing into the 2000’s. There is even a research organization through Columbia University which gathers and promotes research and information on Malcolm X's life. Malcolm X's life and his untimely murder are still relevant to Muslims in America today; unfortunately the conspiracy surrounding his assassination is also still relevant to Muslims today.
The tactics used by the Counter Intelligence Program which allegedly played a significant role in his murder are now being used to target Arabs, Muslims, and South East Asians in the United States. The four strategies used by COINTELPRO in the 1960s--infiltration, psychological warfare, legal harassment, and extralegal force--can be found in current behavior towards Muslims. Infiltration is shown through informants attending mosques and fishing for or deliberately instigating incriminating remarks from Muslims. Also evident in the legal harassment caused by social profiling at airports and even psychologically damaging media which vilifies Muslims.
